Breast augmentation with silicone implants

Breast augmentation with silicone implants, or augmentation, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. The most common reasons for this operation are breast atrophy or undesirable breast development.

To whom is breast augmentation with silicone implants suitable for?

The typical patient is a mother of a few children, aged around 25-40 years, who wants their breasts to regain their former shape, size, and balance. Women in their early twenties who do not have children and whose breasts have not developed as desired in comparison to the rest of their body also occasionally seek help with augmentation surgery. The third – much talked about but rarer – group consists of women who want clearly distinguishable, large silicone breasts.

How is breast augmentation with silicone implants performed?

Before surgery, it is essential to find a breast implant with the right shape and size. During the consultation, you can try on and examine different implants in front of a mirror. The size of the implant and the shape of the breast are largely determined by anatomical factors. If the breasts are sagging, the breast tissue may need to be reshaped during the surgery.

People considering new breasts naturally have their own wishes, but when choosing implants, it is advisable to listen to the surgeon's experience. Generally, people who have undergone surgery are very satisfied with the size chosen together with the surgeon.

Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. There are several surgical methods, but most silicone implants are currently placed partially under the muscle. In women in particular, the layer of fat at the top of the breast is often very thin, which means that the edge and wrinkles of an implant placed on top of the muscle may be visible.

You can go home on the day of the surgery. Follow-up visits are scheduled one month and six months after the surgery

After surgery

Most patients can return to work after a few days. Most of the post-operative swelling usually disappears within a few weeks, at which point the breasts reach their final size. The shape of the breasts may also change over the next 3-4 months: usually, the breasts will settle and soften as the natural scar tissue matures.

Postoperative pain varies from person to person. However, the breasts are not a particularly pain-sensitive area, and in most cases, standard painkillers are sufficient for pain management. It is essential to wear a support bra after surgery: initially, the bra should be worn day and night, and later only during physical activity.

Sairaala KL uses Motiva and Mentor breast implants. Sairaala KL was the first clinic in Finland to start using Motiva implants back in 2014. Therefore Sairaala KL has the most extensive and longest-standing experience with this brand.

Due to antibiotic irrigation developed by Sairaala KL, breast implant hardening is very rare.
