I graduated as a doctor in 1999 and as a plastic surgeon from the University of Helsinki in 2010. I have worked extensively with congenital abnormalities, injuries, and diseases of the face and breasts, as well as post-cancer conditions. I have been particularly fond of my work at "HUSUKE", the cleft surgery unit at HUS, where we treat facial development disorders in people of all ages, often rebuilding the nose or ear from scratch.
I have been running a private practice since 2007, initially alongside my hospital work, but now full-time.
A truly significant professional experience for me was the fellowship I completed in 2012 at The Royal Free Hampstead in London and at several private hospitals, where I gained a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, including in the field of aesthetic surgery.
I defended my doctoral thesis in 2017 on Meretoja's disease, which is a progressive facial nerve paralysis that is also accompanied by abnormal sagging of the face and skin.
Science and education, as well as teaching younger colleagues, have always been close to my heart. Regular training trips abroad are extremely important in this kind of work, for which there are not many experts in Finland.
I am involved in international organizational activities, through which I have been involved in drafting, for example, European treatment recommendations for craniofacial microsomia.
What fascinates me about plastic surgery is the combination of science and art, and the opportunity to improve quality of life and well-being while correcting often difficult functional problems, such as heavy eyelids or breathing difficulties. The balance between a person's personality and facial features is important: finding that balance and seeing the resulting improvement in quality of life is incredibly rewarding. My goal is to achieve a visible but natural result.
