Enlarging the tip of the lower jaw with an implant permanently corrects facial proportions. The procedure makes the lower jaw more prominent. A milder jawline augmentation can be done with a topical filler or fat graft.
A small lower jaw may emphasize the nose and double chin. Genioplasty is suitable for all patients whose jaw is too small in relation to the other proportions of their face. A more prominent chin is also perceived as more masculine, and therefore genioplasty can be part of facial masculinization surgery in connection with gender reassignment. The surgery can also be performed in connection with chin liposuction, nose surgery, or a facelift, for example.
In genioplasty, the tip of the chin is corrected with either a silicone or polyethylene implant. The chin implant is attached to the jawbone, and the surgical incision is hidden under the chin. Different chin implants have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the differences between them mainly relate to the hardness and moldability of the implant. Both silicone and harder polyethylene implants have been used safely for decades in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
Genioplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. You can go home on the day of the surgery. The recovery period is typically 2-3 weeks, during which time the swelling and bruising usually disappear.
The price of the procedure includes one follow-up visit to the doctor and any necessary stitch removal/wound care visits.
