Scars are corrected if they are tattooed, spread, tight, visible, or otherwise considered harmful. It should be noted that even after scar repair, a small scar will always remain. The principle is to allow scars to mature for about a year after the injury before proceeding with any repair. The procedures are usually performed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis.
Sometimes scars can also be treated with laser resurfacing or microneedling.
Keloid and hypertrophic scars, i.e., thick scars, require special expertise, and sometimes it is impossible to remove or repair them.
