Long-standing scars can be faded by laser.
Lasers can be used on many types of scar tissue. Nd:YAG, or neodymium lasers, can be used on thick, overgrown, or hypertrophic scars, and the results can be further improved with an erbium laser, which affects the skin's surface. Scars become less visible, redness is reduced, and elasticity is increased. The Erbium laser is also suitable for treating acne scars.
Before treatment, the skin is cooled with cold air. Redness disappears quickly with superficial treatments. After treatment, the skin must be well protected from the sun to prevent pigmentation disorders. The treatment can be repeated if necessary.
